The official public holiday falls after the Sunni reckoning. Eid Milad-un-Nabi, the "Festival of the Prophet's Birth", officially begins in Pakistan with a 31-gun salute in the national capital (Islamabad) and a 21-gun salute from various provincial-level capitals.

When is Muhammad's birthday?

'Milad' is celebrated in the month of Rabi'ul Awwal, the third month of the Muslim calendar.

Also commonly known as 'Milad-ul-Nabi', this day is celebrated as a public holiday in many countries with large Muslim populations as it is the birthday of the founder of Islam and the promulgator of the Quran. is commemorated.

Shias celebrate it on the 17th of this month, while Sunnis celebrate it on the 12th of Rabi al-Awwal. Some branches of Sunni Islam, such as Wahhabism and Salafism, do not celebrate Milad, meaning it is not a holiday in some countries, such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

Since the Islamic calendar is based on lunar cycles, the date in the Gregorian calendar varies from year to year. The Islamic calendar is about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian calendar, meaning the holiday will occur twice in some years.

Traditions of Muhammad's birthday

Also known as Mawlid Nabi among Malaysian Muslims. It is purely a religious festival and is marked as a public holiday.

The Prophet (PBUH) was born on 12 Rabi al-Awwal 570 AD in Makkah. The full name of the Prophet is Abu al-Qasim Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Abdul Muttalib bin, Hashim.

It is believed that Muhammad was a descendant of Ismail. According to Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, Abraham had two sons, Isaac and Ishmael. While Jews are believed to be descended from Isaac, Arabs are believed to be descended from Ishmael.

By his 6th birthday, Muhammad was an orphan and was raised by his uncle Abu Talib and his grandfather Abd al-Muttalib. He learned about business from his uncle and gained a reputation as a reliable businessman.

It was not until Muhammad was 40 years old that he was commanded by the angel Gabriel, who carried God's message, to proclaim the Oneness of God and to shun the idolatry of his tribesmen.

Over the next 20 years, his preaching of the Qur'an was revealed to him would establish Islam, one of the world's great religions.

Throughout the Islamic world, Muhammad's birthday is celebrated with religious lectures and recitations of verses from the Qur'an, in mosques decorated with lights for the occasion.

The main origins of Milad celebrations can be traced back to 8th century Mecca when the house where the Prophet was born was converted into a place of prayer by the Al-Khizurans. Al-Khizoran was the mother of a caliph, Harun al-Rashid.

Although public celebrations of Muhammad's birth did not occur for four centuries after his death. The earliest Milad is claimed to be from the 12th century and is probably of Persian origin.

Sunni and Shia branches of Islam have different ways of celebrating this day. The Shia community believes that on the 12th of Rabi al-Awwal, the Prophet of Islam chose Hazrat Ali as his successor. The Sunni community offers prayers throughout the month and does not mourn on this day.

During Milad celebrations, the national flag is hoisted on all government buildings, a 31-gun salute is fired in Islamabad and a 21-gun salute is fired at the provincial headquarters in the morning. Millions of people gather at Minar-e-Pakistan in Lahore on the night between the 11th and 12th of Rabi-ul-Awwal for Milad celebrations, which is the largest gathering in the world to celebrate Milad.

All public and private institutions will remain closed throughout the day. Important buildings and mosques are illuminated at night on public holidays.
